First developed in Canada in 1965, the French Immersion program is based on decades of research into its effectiveness both in teaching a second language and in achieving the outcomes of the Alberta Programs of Study.

Late French Immersion begins in Grade 7 and continues to Grade 12. Grades 6- 9: French Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies are taught in French; all other subjects are taught in English

These Programs provide students with the opportunity to become highly functional in speaking, reading, writing, listening and communicating in French by the end of Grade 12.

Please check the CBE website to determine your designated French Immersion school.

Language Requirement to enter Late French Immersion

There is no requirement for students to have prior exposure to French to begin classes in Grade 7 Late French Immersion. Parents are also not expected to understand French.
