Oki, Danit'astada, Âba wathtec, Tânisi, Taanishi, Bonjour, Hello Branton Families,
As we move through February, we continue to reflect on this year’s Black History Month theme: African Americans and Labor. This theme recognizes the invaluable contributions of Black communities in shaping history through perseverance and hard work. At Branton School, we remain committed to fostering conversations about equity, inclusion, and historical awareness in our classrooms.
Did you know? One remarkable Black Canadian who helped shape our country is Viola Desmond (1914-1965).
A successful businesswoman and civil rights activist, Desmond made history in 1946 when she challenged racial segregation in Nova Scotia by refusing to leave a whites-only section of a movie theatre. Her courageous stand led to legal changes and inspired future civil rights movements in Canada. Today, she is honored on the $10 bill as a symbol of resilience and justice.
A heartfelt thank you to all students, parents, and Branton staff for their incredible support during our Open House on February 6, 2025. Your enthusiasm, dedication, and engagement made the evening a true success. From the students who proudly showcased their work, to the parents who shared their Branton experiences, and to the staff who helped organize and welcome families—your contributions are deeply appreciated. This event would not have been possible without you!
A few important reminders for the upcoming weeks:

Cafeteria Update
We want to share that Ms. Thompson, our cafeteria cook, has accepted a full-time position at a CBE high school. Her last day at Branton will be February 12, 2025. We are grateful for her dedication and the delicious meals she has provided to our students.
The hiring process is underway, and we hope to have a new cafeteria cook starting after Family Day. However, this is dependent on finding the right candidate, so we will keep you updated. Please note that the Branton Cafeteria may be closed during the week of February 18, 2025, if we are unable to fill the position in time.
Thank you for your understanding, and we will provide more information as soon as possible.

Reminder for Lates and Absences
When your student is going to be Absent, please call the Attendance Line: 403 777 7440 ext 5000. If there is going to be an Extended Absence eg: Holiday, Please have your student pick up an Extended Absence form in the front office. May we ask that you do not email the General Mailbox for Branton as that email is not checked before attendance is sent out.
When you know your student is going to be late you can call the Attendance Line for that as well. When your student is late they need to come to the office and 1st sign in on the Yellow Sheet on the clipboard in the office, then fill out a late slip and take it to class. The Yellow sheet is what is used to notify the office that the absence needs to be changed to late. If this is not done, it may result in parents receiving an unnecessary attendance call. In order to sign out. we require a note from home for them to bring to the office when it is time to sign out.
We thank you in advance for your help reinforcing this with your Students.
