Halloween is Coming!

Halloween is nearly here (Tuesday) and a great number of our students are planning to dress up in costume on October 31. If you are in the process of finalizing costume selection with your student in advance of the day, please consider these questions together:

  • Does your child's costume comply with school guidelines for modest dress?
  • Does your child's costume involve a weapon?
  • Does your child's costume represent a negative stereotype, such as "terrorist" or "urban ghetto dweller"?
  • Does your child’s costume involve a mask that hides their identity entirely?
  • Does your child’s costume allude to committing acts of violence against others?
  • Does your child’s costume involve excessively gory elements?
  • Does it involve changing the colour of their skin?
  • Does it allude to a culture that is not the child's own, such as a kimono, a turban or a feather headdress?
  • Does it mock religious beliefs (nun or priest)?
  • Does it mock the LGBTQ+ community?
  • Is it based on tragic or violent historical moments, such as slavery or “cowboy and Indian" role play?

If the response to any of these questions is yes, we would ask you and your child to reconsider the costume that they will be wearing to school. It is our hope that all students will be able to enjoy the Halloween activities we are planning for the afternoon of October 31 without feeling insulted or otherwise upset or uncomfortable. If your child is not participating in the afternoon activities, please send a written note with your child and they can sign out at lunch time. No phone calls will be accepted that afternoon and please note, if you have to pick up your child early - they should meet you at the office as they may be difficult to find in the dance.

Grade 6 Social Studies

This week in Études Sociales (SS), grade six students are applying and demonstrating their knowledge of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms by creating their own for a fictional country; while they are coming up with their own unique rights and freedoms, they must show links to the Canadian Charter. Students are also encouraged to flesh out the countries they've invented by describing their cultures and creating a national flag.

Athletics

The Girls and Boys Soccer Teams finished their respective seasons late last week and showed incredible Branton spirit, teamwork, commitment and resilience! The girls were undefeated in league play and the boys had a strong finish. Both made it to the finals in their division.

Although much lighthearted teasing back and forth between the two teams continued throughout September and October, the boys ended their season with a championship win against Valley Creek and well-earned bragging rights! 😉

The girls played Twelve-Mile Coulee in their championship game and fought hard but ultimately lost 2-1 to finish 2nd in their league. Regardless of this loss, Branton is still so proud of these girls for their grit and determination.

We were extremely lucky with the weather this season and enjoyed most games and practices in the warmth and sunshine. Many thanks to the coaches (M. Abbott, M. Genge, M. Lau, Mme. Crepin & Mrs. Fisher).

Student Leadership Team

Thirteen of our Student Leadership Team members were able to take part in the Horizons Leadership Conference on Thursday Oct. 26 at Centennial High School this week. Students got to hear from guest speakers Alvin Law and four time Guiness world record holder, Scott Hammell. Our students experienced a great day full of inspiration, motivation, and information aimed to make Branton a better place to live and learn.

Band Information

Save the date – our band concert will be on Tuesday, December 12, 2023!

Band Uniform - Here is a link to order the band polo shirt which we use for our performances or special days. There is an optional hoodie if they wanted to have that, and they could write their name on the sleeve. The link is available until October 31 and delivery by the end of November. Polo shirts are $25 and I do have some sizing available in my office. They do fit differently, so please check the sizing chart or ask your child to see me to try one.
