November Update from Mme Kelly & Mme Humby

As parent teacher conferences are taking place this Thursday and Friday, please make sure to check your child’s MyCBE account to review their grades or any missing work.              Here   is the link again that shares how to view an  assignment: https://www.cbe.ab.ca/support/Documents/MyCBE-K-9-Attendance-Assignment-Information

As these conferences are not mandatory, they are time to chat about specific concerns or questions you may have regarding your child and their progress. That being said, we encourage you to reach out at any point in time throughout the year outside of conferences should you have concerns/questions.

In Math, students write a quiz tomorrow on adding Integers. They have completed all the review and practice in class for this quiz, and will show what they know tomorrow in class. Wednesday we will be moving onto subtraction with Integers and that will wrap up this unit. Our next unit (which will likely be in early December), will be learning about the Cartesian Plane.

In Science, we have been working on our new unit of Astronomy. Today students went for a walk, modeling the real distances between the planets of our solar system. We will be soon working on a project on the planets that will take us the next couple of weeks. This project will be mostly completed in class, with potentially a small portion that will be worked on at home. This unit will be continued for the next few months, with a wrap up at the beginning of the new year.

As always, everything they need can be found on my Google Classroom page (Mme Kelly). I continue to post daily updates, explaining what we accomplished each day.

In Health, students are currently working on Conflict Resolution, and the healthy ways to resolve it. They are starting a group assignment, creating a skit that they will present to the class. This skit will present a relatable conflict, and share the steps in which we would solve it in the real world.

In Phys Ed, we have been working on our Fitness unit, and will be doing the second round of activities in the coming weeks to compare our results with our first set of activities. Please make sure your child has a change of clothes and appropriate footwear to participate in Phys Ed, as many students are forgetting about this.

In French, we are currently working on forming complete sentences, specifically delving into the different parts of a sentence. The exploration of verbs in the present tense has begun! Regular and irregular verbs, along with the three different groupings of verbs (based on their endings), are now on track. We are having weekly verb check-ins and will be starting a written individual assignment that will showcase our knowledge of verbs, sentence structure, different types of sentences, and creativity! We started our show, Makinium, in September and are continuing this to enhance our vocabulary and understanding of different French accents and listening comprehension.

For Social Studies, we are traveling back in time to Ancient Athens! With our historian mindsets and the knowledge gained from our previous unit on "What is Democracy?" the students are exploring:

  • How was the government of ancient Athens structured?
  • How did the structure of the government in ancient Athens provide opportunities for citizens to participate in decision-making?
  • How did identity, status, and class structure impact citizenship in ancient Athens?
  • How did the social structure of ancient Athens impact its political structure?
  • To what extent were democratic ideals of equity and fairness part of the structure of government and society in ancient Athens?

We will be starting an individual project this week titled "A Day in the Life in Ancient Athens." The students will be using their creative and critical thinking skills, interpretation and analyzing skills, considering multiple perspectives, and using appropriate data to complete a day in the life of a fictitious individual of their choosing from this time period.

In our English class, we are wrapping up our Parts of Speech and Figures of Speech unit. We have ongoing reading comprehension quizzes, reading periods (read to self, and Mme reads to the class), critical thinking challenges with rebus puzzles, and morning riddles! The next thing on our journey is narrative writing! What is the genre? What is a plot? What are character traits? These are just some of the areas we will get familiar with before we begin our novel study!

We hope that with this update, you will be able to gain a clearer picture of what learning has been taking place, and that this can answer any questions you may have had regarding a specific subject.

If you have any questions or immediate concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Kind regards,

Mme Kelly & Mme Humby
